In 2014 the Centre of Excellence “Collection of nonpathogenic and pathogenic microorganisms” was founded in the Institute. The curator of the collection is Deputy Director on scientific work A.V. Valyshev. Main trends of activity: deposition of microbial strains isolated from natural water bodies, healthy and sick human and animal bodies; characteristics of virulent and persistent properties of bacterial and fungal cultures; maintenance of the microbial cultures which are the most valuable for biotechnology. The Collection has biomedical significance and provides opportunity to deposit the pathogenic microorganisms cultures (III-IV biosafety levels according to Russian classification of pathogenicity). It is one of the large collection that includes a great number of human microflora taxa. Also there are strains of algae, heterotrophic protists, bacteria and archaea isolated from saline and brackish water bodies.
